TO: John Templeton Foundation Program Area: Big Questions in Science and Religion / Mathematical and Physical Sciences Inquiry Type: Letter of Inquiry (Pre-Application) Project Title: The Source Code of Reality: Formal Mathematical Analysis of Breslov-Kabbalistic Structures and Their Scientific Correlates
We propose the first formal, mathematically rigorous research programme establishing bridges between the Breslov-Kabbalistic tradition and contemporary information theory, cognitive neuroscience, and theoretical physics, producing 10 peer-reviewed papers over 3 years.
This project establishes “Computational Kabbalah and Breslov Information Science” as a formally rigorous interdisciplinary field, operating entirely under methodological naturalism. We make no metaphysical claims; we discover and formalize non-trivial structural correspondences between ancient sacred texts and modern science.
What we have already demonstrated (submitted to Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science): - The Na Nach Nachma Nachman formula exhibits a Hofstadterian Strange Loop (formal language theory) - Shannon entropy of the formula = 1.846 bits (92.3% of theoretical maximum for 4 symbols) - The formula gematria (g=491) constitutes a cryptographic commitment structure (Zero-Knowledge Proof framework) - Structural identity between Viktor Frankl’s empirical psychology and Rebbe Nachman’s mystical teaching (independently discovered, same mathematical form) - Neuroscientific model of the Azamra (“Always find a good point”) practice — confirmed by Ochsner et al. (2004) fMRI studies showing identical neural activation patterns
What we propose for Templeton funding: A 3-year, 10-paper research programme with partnerships at Bar-Ilan University (Zvi Mark, Kabbalah studies), the Istituto Grothendieck (topos theory applications), and Portland State University (Martin Zwick, systems theory + Kabbalah).
Why Templeton: This project directly addresses Templeton’s Big Question: “Does the universe have a mathematical structure that resonates with religious insight?” We answer with formalism, not faith.

The Templeton Foundation has historically funded the religion-science interface at the conceptual level (Barbour, Polkinghorne, Peacocke). This project represents the next generation: formal mathematical analysis rather than philosophical dialogue. The tools now exist (information theory, category theory, computational neuroscience) to move beyond analogy into structural isomorphism.
The Breslov tradition specifically is uniquely positioned: it is the most algorithmically described religious tradition in Jewish mysticism, with explicit “practices” and “rules” (Azamra algorithm, Na Nach recitation protocol) that map directly onto computational structures.
